OCEANIA Fight Promotions (OFP) has taken the initiative to create awareness on the Covid-19 pandemic using Papua New Guinea professional boxers.
OFP director Maryanne Millie said during the launch of the awareness on Friday that Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (KPHL) sponsored their boxers to carry out the awareness.
“All of us are in this fight against the coronavirus,” she said.
“If you follow rules, you don’t get knocked out by Covid-19.
“If you don’t follow the rules, then your back will be against the ropes. It is just like boxing.
“That is why we want to use our boxers to deliver the message to the people, especially in settlements and villages.
“In Papua New Guinea, people still don’t follow the rules set by our Government. The bulk of the population still lacks education on the virus.
“Many of them only know the name of the virus but they don’t understand the risk and how catastrophic it can be.
“It is important that we take the initiative by illustrating to the public in a simpler way using sports like boxing so that they are fully aware of the Covid-19 situation.”
Boxing patron Ben Micah appealed to others to support the awareness as it was important to educate people on the pandemic.
He said funding the campaign would also help the boxers prepare for their international bouts later in the year.
Professional boxers Raka Kauko Jr, Tom Boga, Douglas Walo and Ian Buckley are involved in promotional videos to create awareness on the pandemic.
