THE United Nations Development Programme is engaging the private sector to improve the country’s climate and weather information.
A group of 20 people involved in agribusiness, economic development and agricultural research attended a workshop last month to discuss a funding proposal to assist PNG respond to climate change.
UNDP project manager Rabi Narayan Gaudo said the workshop was organised by the UNDP and the PNG Government.
It aimed to get assistance from the $10 billion Green Climate Fund created to support the efforts of developing countries in responding to climate change.
The proposal will improve the resilience of PNG to floods, rough seas, landslides and droughts.
He said the project had the potential to benefit the business sector in Papua New Guinea.
“We can improve the current system for observing, gathering, analysing, and disseminating climate and weather data and assist smallholder farmers, large agribusinesses and fishermen,” he said.
“Everyday citizens who currently have few resources related to short-term and long-term weather notices can be supplied with proper resource to maximise.”
