Province establishes cultural show

PEOPLE in Southern Highlands will be able to promote and preserve their culture through a newly established provincial cultural show called Eastern end cultural festival, according to the National Cultural Commission (NCC).
The commission recognised the Southern Highlands Eastern end cultural festival as a national event during the launch in Port Moresby yesterday.
The festival will run from October 28-30 and will be an annually fixture in the NCC’s calendar.
NCC executive director Steven Kilanda presented a certificate of recognition as well as a cheque for K5,000 to the organisers.
He congratulated festival chairman Daniel Lucas for establishing the event.
Kilanda said the event would feature live performances from artists as well as the main draw of cultural groups from around Southern Highlands and some from neighbouring provinces.
Lucas said cultural shows were a great opportunity for people to get excited about their culture, practices and identity.
He said performing and wearing traditional attire and expressing culture was a way of preserving, remembering and being proud of them.
Kilanda told Lucas and his committee that while the NCC could not fully fund the event, it had sanctioned and certified the festival.
He urged the Eastern end cultural festival to engage more children and students in their cultural programme and performances.
Lucas thanked NCC for its support.
