MOROBE experienced a quiet New Year period with only one murder reported in Bulolo, provincial police commander Supt Alex N’Drasal says.
He said the period was generally peaceful and incident free in the province’s eight districts
“The credit goes to the public as well as police in Morobe for their law and order awareness conducted before the Christmas and New Year period and the tireless efforts of police,” N’Drasal said.
He said a person by the name of Francis Bonte from Manki village, ward five in Watut local level government, Bulolo, was killed between 11pm and midnight on New Year’s eve.
“He (Bonte) was killed by some drunken suspects and his relative retrieved the body and it is now at the Angau hospital morgue.”
N’Drasal said the suspects were from the same village and were known to police.
He said police officers had been to the scene and started investigations and expected to make arrests soon.
He said apart from that incident in Bulolo, the other seven districts – Finschhafen, Huon Gulf, Kabwum, Markham, Menyamya, Tewai-Siassi and Nawaeb – reported a trouble-free New Year period.
N’Drasal said New Year revellers along the Markham section of the Highlands Highway as well as along the Bulolo Highway cooperated with police and celebrated peacefully.
“There were drunkards on the roads but they (the drunkards) cooperated well with police officers on duty when told to clear the roads and celebrate indoors. We thank community leaders and the people for a job well done in assisting police during that time and it is very positive result for all.”
N’Drasal thanked the district MPs who supported police operations in the province as well as Morobe administration, Governor Ginson Saonu and others.
