WESTERN Highlands is to have five more secondary schools in the province to cater for the increasing number of grade 10 students passing out every year.
The province has 30 high schools established by Governor Paias Wingti and the provincial education board (PEB).
The PEB has chosen five high schools from the 30 schools to upgrade their status to secondary level to accommodate the growing number of grade 10s.
PEB chairman Lawrence Pena and deputy John Eggins, board member John Basinu and executive officer Edward Yeski gave K50,000 each to the high schools on Friday so that they could extend and carry on with the infrastructure development to upgrade the facilities to secondary.
Pena said Wingti had a vision to divert much of the funding and resources to education.
He said Western Highlands was the only province that had the highest number of schools, giving an opportunity to the future generation.
Pena said the K250,000 given to the five high schools was part of preparing them to raise their status to secondary.
He said those five schools were seen as capable of raising their standard to allow grade 10s to continue their studies.
