 EASTERN Highlanders are proud of the Goroka Didiman Supplies Brumbies winning the first women’s rugby league challenge in the Coca-Cola Ipatas Cup.

The Jimmy Maima-coached women kept the spirit of rugby league alive after the men’s teams failed make the finals, sponsor Jobby Bal said.

Goroka Didiman Brumbies beat Mount Hagen Kung Peng 8-6 in the women’s grand final to pocket K6,000 last Sunday.

“Some of the teams from Eastern Highlands that entered the competition this season have lost, while the Brumbies girls made it through to the finals,” he said.

The team captained by Mary Maima worked hard to win this first challenge.

Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko, who officiated at the competition grand final in Wabag on Sunday, was proud to see women taking part and encouraged more women to take part.

It was said it was the first time for the people of Enga to see women playing rugby league.
