Public holidays

Letters

PAPUA New Guinea is beautifully decorated with unique cultures and many traditions.
As citizens, there are times we pause to pay tribute and respect to our country and to those who were involved bravely.
However, many of those days we pay respect to, have their own stories.
Whether good or bad, those stories in the past, played an important role in our country.
When public holidays fall, I see foreign owned shops, supermarkets and business houses open and trade like any other ordinary working days.
I think this is unfair because the employees of those business are PNG nationals (born citizens) and they too deserve a break in order to commemorate their country’s public holidays.
Can the Government explain and respond to this issue?
Is there an act in the constitution of Papua New Guinea which allows foreigners to do business during approved public holidays?
If we continue encourage this practice in PNG, think about how our country will be observing public holidays in future.
Will our young citizens observe those public holidays with respect and dignity or will those very important days be just any other ordinary business trading days.
