THE Public Service needs to work hard to do away with being regarded as inefficient in service delivery, says Minister for Public Service Joe Sungi.
When addressing the Somare Institute of Leadership and Governance (Silag) graduation last week, he said: “This trend can be changed when public servants start to focus more on improving themselves and their work ethics.
“With attaining an educational qualification, you must make a difference in all sectors of the public service to being more efficient and effective in service delivery.
“You are privileged to have the Somare name tag added to you and with leadership and governance, always carry these words as these are credentials to make you rise up to serve our people and the Government.
“You cannot be graduating from a premier institute and then be wearing thongs and clocking in for work late every day and yet expect to get promoted and further paid by the Government.
“You have a responsibility to your service and from entry, your existence to your exit in public service, and therefore you are bound to the Government of the day as your employer.
“Most times the public service is branded as inefficient in service delivery because some of us are not taking our work seriously.
“But we can change that and just because you are not taught life skills in school such as personal grooming and time management, it does not give you an excuse because you as a person have the power to make a change.
“Unless public service changes, we will continue to be criticised for poor service delivery.
“Be proud of your achievement and start dressing more professionally, manage your time and provide the service to the Government and your country,” Sungi added.
