THE East New Britain (ENB) public have been urged to see the importance of keeping receipts when doing shopping in Kokopo.
The call was made by the Kokopo-Vunamami Urban local level government (KVULLG) health division on Friday after receiving weekly complaints from the public about damaged goods purchased from shops.
KVULLG acting senior environmental health and safety inspector Helen Tade said it was important that people checked their purchases before throwing away their shopping receipts.
“If you purchased something from the shops, especially food items, do not throw them away or wait for another day. You must bring the item and the receipt to us so that we can help you,” she said.
“If you have the receipt we will be able to justify and help you.
“We are here for the public to safeguard the public rights, safety and health.”
Tade said her office received complaints on a regular basis and did monthly inspections with the government agencies to check the quality of goods sold and to ensure that businesses were complying with local health and safety regulations.
She said the KVULLG and partners such as the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) were working to ensure that all businesses followed national and provincial laws.
“There are penalties in place for businesses operating in the province who do not comply with laws and regulations and we are monitoring these businesses closely,” Tade said.
