Public urged to report crimes

POLICE have urged the public to come forward to report crimes and support the judicial process.
“While police use a range of investigative tools to locate victims or offenders in viral online videos, formal complaints by affected individuals, families and communities are required to ensure offenders are brought to justice,” Deputy Police Commissioner operations Samson Kua said in a statement on Thursday. Kua made the point after two disturbing videos of violent offences circulated on social media platforms during the week.
Kua further called on people close to or aware of the original source of the videos to come forward and help police with information.
“Over the past week, two graphic videos have circulated online, including one of women being brutally abused in what appears to be sorcery or sanguma accusation related violence,” he said.
“Another video is of a deceased male with substantial knife wounds that is believed to have been retribution from tribesmen after the dead man was accused of killing children.
“These videos are at the centre of investigations by the police in Enga and Northern commands. “There has been no formal complaint lodged with police relating to either case, which has made investigating these crimes more challenging, but in both cases the locations where the offences are believed to have occurred and people involved have been identified.
“Police in Enga province are moving in on a village just outside the Porgera mine area, where the video of the violence against the women appears to have been recorded.
“At the same time police in Northern have identified the location where a video was taken of the dead man with wounds to his body.
“There are no further details that can be provided at this point while investigations are underway, and additional information will be provided as this comes to hand.”
