PUPILS of St Anne’s Elementary School in the nation’s capital have joined the global community to observe the World Environment Day yesterday.

They were asked to bring a plant to school to plant as part of the day’s activity.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) stated on its website that this year’s theme; “Think. Eat. Save” is an anti-food waste and food loss campaign that aimed to discourage wastage.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) 1.3 billion tones of food was wasted every year, which is equal to the same amount of food produced in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa.

“One in every seven people in the world goes to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of five die daily from hunger,” it said.
