IF there is something the SP PNG Hunters are doing right at this stage of the Q-Cupseason, it is playing as a team and not as individuals says back-rower Nixon Put.
The Western Highlander, in his debut last year was part of the Hunters side that won the club’s maiden premiership.
Put recalls team work as an important aspect in their game that saw them win games and be consistent.
Over their last five home games, the side have won four from five and improved to a spot outside the top six and according to Put, it has all been as a result of team work.
“I’m confident we can make the top six and try to defend the title,” Put said.
“Working as a team is very important and that’s what we’ve been doing better over the last couple of our games.
“If we want to do well in the finals we need to continue to work as a team. If we can play as a team and not individuals, then we can be able to defend our title.
“We just have to train hard, put in extra effort in every area on and off the field.
“Our defence has improved. We’re better than what we were at the beginning of the year and that’s because of team work.
“I normally play on the left edge and I’ve been talking with the boys on that side and we’re doing well,” he said.
“We have a tough one against Souths Logan this weekend.
“The last time we played them, they came up here and beat us so we’re looking to pay them back,” Put said.
Put himself has transformed from the rugged hard-running back-rower he was last season into a more complete footballer this year — one that offers an attacking threat as a linkman who can play 80 minutes.
