AN Australian-based Papua New Guinea women’s group has come to the aid of earthquake victims of Hela and Southern Highlands with a cash donation of $A10,000 (K24,000).
The money, raised by the Cairns Highlands Women’s Group, was presented to Secretary for Finance Dr Ken Ngangan, who is also a member of the National Disaster and Emergency Committee, recently.
Group leader Margaret Kiangali said during the presentation that they sympathised with the victims of the earthquake, especially villagers in the two provinces, and wanted to help.
She said even though their group members lived outside their country of birth, their hearts and minds were still in Papua New Guinea, and they were committed to helping out in future natural disasters.
Ngangan, on receiving the donation, thanked the group members for their efforts in raising the money and for their commitment for the future.
He said the earthquake had wreaked devastating havoc to the two provinces and the nation as a whole, from which they would take a long time to recover.
