THE Port Moresby Racquets Club has hosted a four-day squash camp to identify raw talents at the junior level.
Club director Merlyn Alarcos said about 35 children took part in the camp which started on Tuesday and concludes today.
“The objective of having this camp during the school holidays is to expose the sport to new kids and also an opportunity for us to identify raw talents and develop them,” Alarcos said.
“It was a good camp, because we managed to pick out a few talents so we will see what we can due with these juniors moving forward, “ she said.
Alarcos said they facilitated the camp with the help of visiting coach and Australian squash player Raj Nanda, who was in the country training junior squash players for almost a month.
“We were able to have our visiting coach Raj here for a month so the naming rights sponsors Skel Rice has had the opportunity to use his services for this one-week camp,” she said.
“Skel Rice is also one of our good sponsors and their main focus is really junior development and it has been beneficial to the club.
“Through that deal we have had annual squash camps and strength and conditioning sessions, all of that is all part of our junior development programme,” she said.
Alarcos said the main outcome was to keep the kids busy during their holiday.
“We wanted to have this one-week camp during their term break just to keep them busy during the holidays and part of the programme was to develop our existing development squad for over four years so it was a good full week of squash.”
Meanwhile, Alarcos said another squash camp was scheduled for the next school term break with the club looking to expand.
