EFFORTS by police to monitor the Lae Main Market area were given a boost with the provision of five handheld radios by the local Chinese community.
The radios were presented to the Lae Market Police Station to help officers police the area and their public safety and security. Chinese community Chamber of Commerce chairman Jackhe He and members Jamus Lin and Sean Wang told The National that the presentation of the equipment was their part to promote better policing in their community.
They said an additional 10 radios would be given to the police station and would install one more closed circuit TV camera to assist the current two that had been installed in the market area.
They said Chinese-owned businesses operating in the city had been helped by local police over the years and they were obliged to help them make the city safer for everyone.
Station commander Sgt Gordon Matafimo said the assistance by the Chinese community with the hand-held radios was a big boost to the work of his officers, complementing the installation of the two CCTV cameras at the station in 2019.
He said since the installation of the CCTV camera, most offences committed had been captured by the cameras.
