THE Department of Trade Commerce and Industry has appointed Max Rai to oversee the post of director general in the department’s trade division.

His appointment is effective starting today.

The post has been vacant for the past 14 months since the transfer of the trade function from the Department of Foreign Affairs to the Department of Commerce and Industry last year.

Rai, from East Sepik, was appointed to the post to specifically organise and set up the division pending the appointment of a long term director general.

Rai, who was a former ambassador and prominent seasonal diplomat, is expected to contribute towards consolidating the existing functions of the department through re-establishing the trade division within the existing structure and set up trade offices in strategic locations to safeguard and promote Papua New Guinea’s investment and trade interests.
