RAMALE ward in Kokopo-Vunamami Urban local level government (LLG) of Kokopo, East New Britain (ENB), has moved into a coconut replanting programme.
The community saw the importance of coconut as a crop and have partnered with ENB Kokonas Indastri Korporesen (KIK) to venture into coconut production.
A brief ceremony was held on Monday at Eden Sanctuary Farm site in Tobera plantation to kick start the planting programme.
Kokopo district administrator John Talele commended the people of Ramale for their interest in coconut.
“Today is a public holiday (Queen’s birthday) but I am happy to see the turn out here is good and I am also happy to see you have interest to become a model ward for LLG in this programme with KIK,” he said.
“It is good that we want to enhance the work of coconut production at our ward level so that we all can benefit from it and the most important thing is you are involved and participating in
all the programmes run by KIK in Kokopo and in the province as a whole.”
Talele said some 300 products could be produced from
the humble coconut and the people needed to tap into that potential.
“We call the coconut the tree of life because every part of it is useful and you can make something out from it to earn an income.
“All you have to do is you have to be creative and focused.”
