RAMU Agri-Industries Ltd has launched its ‘Beat plastic bag pollution in Ramu’ campaign.
The programme is in collaboration with three major shop owners and police.
People are encouraged to use eco-bags to save the environment.
Rail sustainability programme manager Laszlo Mathe and community engagement manager-sustainability Melinda Heather Thom cknowledged the Government’s initiative in banning plastic bags. Mathe said Rail embraced Government’s initiative and encouraged people to be mindful when using plastic bags.
He said people should shift to using Rail eco-bags and bilums as unnecessary disposal of plastic bags was polluting land for cultivation.
Papindo, Worldcome Ltd, Most Grace Ltd and police are partnering with Rail to encourage people to be responsible in handling plastic bags.
The programme will be expanded to nearby Bumbu Settlement, Waterais, Dumpu and Walium. Mathe also presented Rail eco-bags to the three shops to be distributed to customers after shopping.
Worldcome Ltd manager Edwin Anthony said Ramu was facing land pollution apart from air and water.
“Within last two years, I’ve realised many plastic bags are going into Bumbu and Ramu rivers,” he said.
“Each year around the world, 1.7 million people die from pollution so we need to understand the impact of pollution.”
