Ramu NiCo project boasts high safety record, survey shows

Business

The Ramu NiCo project in Madang has operated safely for the past 10 years, according to a company survey.
This follows a successful report on the marine survey and monitoring conducted in the Raicoast area of the province.
The company “is liable to comply with all the legal requirements and regulations in
Papua New Guinea and devoted itself to maintaining its good organisational reputation in terms of vibrant environment and safety management and other
operational areas”, the report said.
Since the operation of the project, Ramu NiCo project covered vast areas of the environmental studies such as terrestrial flora and fauna assessment,
aquatic ecological assessment, sediment chemical analysis and others.
A major marine survey under strict and close supervision and with technical support from the Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) also took place.
According to the company, it periodically conducted marine ecological studies covering all components of the marine life, water columns and underwater geographical morphologies.
It is a one part of the entire operational environment management plans (OEMP) to observe and commit to comply with the State and reputable international environmental conservation and protection organisations to protect and minimise the level of environmental impacts at the project’s operating vicinity.
This year, RamuNiCo contracted Ian Hargreaves and Associates and Ninkama Yoba and Associates, based in Australia, to conduct a marine ecological monitoring around the Vitiaz Basin.
