THE Rebiamul Primary School showed it has the talent among its students to play cricket after it was crowned champions of the Term 1 yesterday.

The competition is part of the BSP School Kriket Blast, which took place in the Western Highlands capital during the week.

Rebiamul won all three divisional grand finals, the Under-15 Girls and U17 boys and girls divisions, earning themselves the title of provincial champions. The event was staged at Hagen Technical Training College grounds and was a much fun-filled day with many supporters, students and teachers from all the schools turning up in numbers to witness the event.

Four teams took part in the one-day competition: Hagen Tee Primary, Koglamp Primary, Rebiamul Primary and Mugand Primary schools.

All the schools fielded teams which participated in the U17 and U15 matches in both boys and girls divisions.

In the boys U15 final, Mugand scored 57 runs to beat a determined Rebiamul, who were all out for 28, and in the girls division, Rebiamul reached a commanding total of 4/45 within their eight overs to beat Mugand, who were all out for 29 runs.

In the boys U17 final, Rebiamul  scored 46 runs and edged out Mugand, who were all out for 37, while in the girls division Rebiamul made 45 runs and bowled out Koglamp for 41. Western Highlands regional cricket manager Sowan Gawo said the competition was exciting with each school having a good turnout of students, who were interested in learning how to play the sport.

He said a good number of students had already been exposed in the Gold Nuggets Hard Ball competition and played a good standard of cricket. “We had two teachers, Joseph Mono (Rebiamul) and Jerol Tembon (Mugand) who are now certified basic cricket coaches and I am pleased with the standard of cricket they were able to bring out in their students during the competition,” Gawo said.

“The BSP School Cricket Blast we held was very successful and we will now strengthen this by moving forward in the hard ball competitions that are already underway for the schools in Mt Hagen.”
