NURSES have ignored risks to treat and save lives in the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic must not go unnoticed, Taiwan Trade Mission representative Oliver Liao says.
“Their two years of hard work, and ongoing tasks, has contributed to bringing the pandemic under control in the country,” he said.
“We must, therefore, not forget their sacrifices and contributions.”
Liao spoke at a dinner hosted by his mission to commemorate the International Nurses Day on Thursday.
The dinner was attended by the Papua New Guinea Nurses Association executives, nurses of the National Capital District Health Authority, Port Moresby General Hospital and nurses from around the country currently studying in the University of Papua New Guinea School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Liao said: “We take the opportunity to celebrate the day and to pay tribute to all the hard working nurses and say a big thank you for their efforts to help treat the sick and keep everyone healthy.
“As frontline workers, nurses have been facing much stress and challenges, both physically and mentally, especially after the Covid-19 outbreak.
Association president Frederick Kebai said it was a great gesture from Taiwan to recognise the work and contributions of nurses.
“It is only a few of us here but we represent more than 4,000 members nationwide,” he added.
“We are all looking forward to the day which is also the birthday of the founder of nursing, Florence Nightingale.
“The theme this year is Nurses: A Voice To Lead – Invest In Nursing And Respect Rights To Secure Global Health. It focuses on the need to protect, support and invest in the nursing profession.”
