A LOCAL woman entrepreneur has called for the recognition of the textile industry and investment in it.

Skipy Fashion and Interior Design Ltd manager and designer Sharon Kim Taso said it was a concern to her as a business woman engaged in the contemporary PNG fashion industry that Government was focusing more on the extractive and commodity industries.

“Clothing is one of the main needs everyone has. It was a need in the past, it is a need today and will be a need in the future,” she said.

“We do not produce the material and clothing that we have in this country.”

Taso said PNG women knew how to make or produce clothing that were worn by Papua New Guineans.

“Some of the clothing items produced from overseas factories are not sewn properly, or not knitted properly.”

She suggests that the Government invests in cotton growing or sheep farming.

“Those are the two main things. I think to do our own textile is not difficult. If other countries can do it, Papua New Guinea can also do it,” Tsao.

“The fashion industry is growing and the country is advancing with it. We can do many designs.

“We talk about economic downturn but industries like textile would continue to empower economic growth of this nation. I am truly blessed with the skills and to have ventured into the clothing and fashion industry and will be more than happy to share them with fellow Papua New Guineans.”

Meanwhile, Taso thanked Courts for allowing her space inside the premises to sell her own hand-made products.

“It’s a great stepping stone for me as a local business woman.”
