Reconciliation for political alliance

National

A RECONCILIATION ceremony was held at Lokon village, New Ireland, on Wednesday that re-established and consolidated the political alliance of the clansmen and tribe of the late parliamentarian, Nicholas Brokam, and Governor Sir Julius Chan.
That alliance was established in 1968 at Lokon.
Brokam was one of the first New Irelanders to be elected to a legislative council, serving from 1951 to 1964 through the support of an American Catholic priest.
The New Ireland government said in a statement that differences developed as relatives of Brokam became upset after a request to have a monument of Sir Nicholas placed in the village was not actioned by Sir Julius.
This resulted in the Liengmau clan switching political allegiance and joining the National Alliance during the 2017 National Elections.
Sir Julius said he had never received the letter containing the request and whoever was supposed to present the letter had not followed through. Present to witness the ceremony were the deputy governor Sammy Missen and other members of the provincial executive council.
