Reds hot chance for Super 5 title

Normal, Sports

WITH one game remaining in the 2010 Coca-Coal Super 5 regional rugby showcase leaders Northern Reds have only the Niugini Islanders standing in the way of back to back titles.
The Reds play the Islanders tomorrow at SCRUM oval in Lae while Southern Traders and the Consap Development squad meeting in the first match of the day while the Covec Highlanders have the bye.
The Islanders have rebounded from a poor start losing their first two matches before beating the Development squad 19-17 on Wednesday and will want to end their campaign on a positive note.
But Reds, who lead the table on 12 points need only a win to secure the silverware while main rivals Traders on  10 will be hoping the Islanders can pull off the upset and give them a real shot at reclaiming the Super 5 title.
Traders should not expect too much trouble from a feisty but undersized Development side led by loose forward Billy Torea in the opening encounter.
Should they win it will set up the final clash of the afternoon with the Reds and the Islanders.
Upsets and form slumps aside the Reds are heading for yet another tournament success with the added  pleasure of upstaging the more fancied Traders in this year’s regional rugby rankings.
Players who have shone during the two- week long competition are Jonah Kautu Jr (Traders), George Oki (Traders), Wally Kirika (Reds), Albert Kaupa (Reds) and Solomon Joseph (Highlanders).
The table after four rounds is: Reds (12), Traders (10), Highlanders (7), the Development squad (6) and Islanders (4).
