SOUTHS Logan Magpie Jessikah Reeves says she wants to bond well with local talents in the national women’s squad and represent the country with pride in the upcoming Rugby League World Cup.
The front-rower’s father was born in Rabaul, East New Britain.
Reeves told The National last week that playing for PNG had always been her dream.
“I am honoured and excited to be named in the 23-man squad,” said the 21-year old, who represented Queensland Under-18s in the 2019 State of Origin series.
“It will be my first time to be involved in a World Cup which makes me very excited to get out there and play some footy alongside the girls.
“Making the Orchids squad was my biggest goal for the year.
“I’ve always wanted to represent PNG and seeing my name on the selection list is the best news all year.
“My goal at the World Cup is to create bonds with the local players from PNG.
“This is what I am most excited about, to make some new connections with the girls.
“Anything I can learn and gain from this experience would be amazing.
“I can’t wait to meet the Australian-based players too.
“It will be good for us to gel, train hard, win games and get noticed as a player.
“Most importantly, I want to do our nation proud.”
Reeves said she was learning about the culture of East New Britain where his father and uncle grew up as kids.
“My dad and his brother were born in Rabaul and they moved to Australia when they were younger.
“I’ve learnt a bit about my culture and want to keep learning more,” she said.
Reeves was part of the Brisbane Broncos, but she did not make her National Rugby League Women’s debut.
She made her Queensland BHP premiership debut for Brisbane Tigers last season before joining the Magpies this year.
