POLICE have charged a refugee on Manus with drink driving.
Provincial police commander Chief Inspector David Yapu said a police patrol team arrested Gul Muhamad, 37, of Pakistan at around 11.30pm on Monday.
He said officers saw him driving around at night when he was supposed to be at the refugee camp at West Lorengau.
“Police (also) found that he did not have a PNG driver’s licence and the vehicle was unregistered and not insured.”
Muhamad is facing six counts of traffic offences and is in custody.
Yapu said non-citizens must respect and comply with PNG laws.
He said recently a local died in a road accident while travelling in a vehicle driven by a refugee.
In another incident, a government vehicle driven by the provincial plant manager hit a car hired for the use of the police mobile squad last Saturday on the Lorengau/Momote road.
Yapu said four police officers sustained minor injuries and were treated at the Lorengau General Hospital.
Yapu urged drivers not to speed and to drive with care because of the rain.
