Refugees to be escorted back to Manus centre

FIFTEEN refugees will be returning to Manus today after receiving medical treatment in Port Moresby.
Manus police commander David Yapu told The National that the refugees would be escorted back.
“Some refugees had attempted to run away, so the 15 refugees were sent with an escort team to Port Moresby,” Yapu said.
“The escort team is made up of officers from police, Correctional Services and the PNG Immigration and Citizenship Services Authority (ICSA).
“They will fly with the refugees back to Momote Airport and police will then escort the refugees back to the refugee centre.”
Yapu said five non-refugees would be deported today.
He said though there were a few ongoing issues at the refugee centre, many of them had settled in nicely.
“Refugees are now moving around freely in town and the locals have also been welcoming and kind to the refugees,” Yapu said.
“I am very happy as these refugees will help contribute to the economy of the province.”
