Regional census workshops afoot

REGIONAL census workshops are being conducted around the country for provincial planners, human resource managers, finance and information and
communication technology officers.
National statistician John Igitoi said the workshops are important for the preparation and coordination of operations during the enumeration period from June 17 to 30.
Highlands and Mamose workshops are currently on this week after Southern and New Guinea Islands workshops ended last Friday.
“The census operations will be conducted in the provinces and it is critical that the provinces must be involved in the preparations leading to the actual enumeration.
Igitoi said during the workshop the participants would:

  • UNDERSTAND various census preparatory activities and process;
  • GUIDE, coordinate and synchronise the operations in the province in a more coherent way;
  • BE aware of what is expected from them and how best they can respond to challenges; and,
  • ENSURE publicity and awareness about the census is made available.

Jiwaka administrator Rick Kogen said the province was ready to support the National Statistical Office (NSO) conduct the national census.
“The census is an important exercise that has been long overdue.
“Jiwaka was the first province in the Highlands to sign a
memorandum of agreement with NSO a few months ago and we are ready to conduct the census.
“We are ready to support the census in other Highlands provinces to make it successful for our country.
“After the completion of this exercise, we will use it for our development planning.”
