Registrar wants MPs, parties to submit election expenses

ALL MPs and political parties are required to provide their election expenses to the Registrar of Political Parties Dr Alphonse Gelu says.
He told new MPs during the induction programme yesterday that the registry had to determine how much was spent and raised during the three-month election period up to the return of writs.
“The main purpose of you declaring your election expense is not for the registry to use it against you in any way,” Gelu said. “It’s for our records.”
He told the MPs that during the 2012 general election, the registrar collected K888,000 from fines on MPs who submitted their election returns late.
Three MPs were referred to the Ombudsman Commission for non-compliance.
“For some reason, they didn’t want to submit their returns. So they went to the leadership tribunal and I asked them to pay the full amount,” Gelu said.
