Regular water, power cuts worry Wewak MP

WEWAK MP Kevin Isifu is concerned about the regular water disruptions and power outages in East Sepik.
He relayed this to Prime Minister Peter O’Neill during his visit to Wewak this week.
Isifu, the Minister for Inter-Government Relations, said the service disruptions were affecting the business community in Wewak, and the province in general.
O’Neill, who was in Wewak for the K50.9 million Boram airport upgrade project on Wednesday, said two generators would be brought to the province from Manus as a short-term solution to the problem.
“I know the power problem we have in Wewak. As a short-term solution for East Sepik, we will bring two generators from the asylum centre on Manus to Wewak.
“On water, we must upgrade it. We will talk to PNG Water to ensure they do it. No need to delay and come up with excuses when they have funding for it.”
National Planning and Implementation Minister Richard Maru said the Boram airport upgrade had been “long overdue”.
“When VIPs visit Wewak, there is no VIP lounge. It’s an embarrassment. We are grateful to the Government for including Wewak in the project roll-out.” He said the province would become an economic powerhouse in the future.
“We have the ocean, the Sepik plain and we have the river. We just need enabling infrastructure to help us unleash our potential as a province.”
He thanked O’Neill for the recent cabinet decision to partner with an Israeli company to start Sepik Chicken, grain and innovation project.
