TEAM Papua New Guinea’s women’s 4x100m relay quartet of Adrine Monagi, Toea Wisil, Isila Apkup and Leonie Beu set a new national record of 45.38 seconds in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, United Kingdom, on Saturday.
Despite finishing sixth in their heat, the time was still good enough surpassing the 45.85s recorded in the recent Pacific Mini Games in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands.
In other results one day nine, Feanor Siaguru and Madako Suari Jr proved too strong for Guyana’s Shomari Wiltshire and Jason-Ray Khalil with a 2-0 squash win in the Plate quarterfinal of the men’s doubles.
Meanwhile, Karo Iga’s valiant efforts in the men’s decathlon saw him record a personal best next at Alexander Stadium on Friday.
Over the two days of competition, Iga set personal bests in the 100m with 10.94 seconds, in the shot put with a throw of 11.05m and in the 400m after clocking 48.61.
Iga also set a season’s best in the 110m hurdles, recording a time of 16.73s.
There were three more personal bests for Iga in the discus throw with 31.88m, in the pole vault clearing 3.90m, javelin throw with 51.30m and ending with another season’s best in the 1,500m with a time of 4:56.54. Iga finished with a total of 6761 points, placing seventh overall.
Also in athletics, Toea Wisil’s time of 24.43s in the women’s 200 semifinal was not enough to take her any further. Wisil finished the race in eighth place. In the women’s 100m hurdles, Adrine Monagi’s time of 13.84s in her heat was not enough to advance while Rellie Kaputin finished with a season’s best in the women’s long jump with a distance of 5.95m.
Annie Topal also recorded a season’s best in the women’s triple jump with 12.57m. Other results from day eight, in the squash mixed doubles Plate quarterfinal, Amity Alarcos and Madako Suari Jr went down to Guyana’s Mary Fung-A-Fat and Shomari Wiltshire 2-0 (11-8, 11-9).
Meanwhile, Team PNG has named Morea Baru as their flag bearer for today’s closing cermony.
