Reopen Angau’s psychiatric ward

Letters

MEDICAL and administrative officers of Angau Memorial Hospital who have decided to close the psychiatric ward should be investigated by the Health Department.
Prior to the shutdown, psychiatric patients were well taken care of by doctors and nurses engaged in there.
Under the leadership of the psychiatric specialist Dr Goiba Tienang over the last few years, the patients were correctly medicated and well managed, which led to some returning to normal life.
Currently, we are having a hard time controlling patients.
The damages done by the patients at our homes and communities are too much.
We want an investigation to be conducted to establish the facts behind the closure of the ward and ensure those responsible answer for their actions.
The ward should be reopened.
As a parent who has been in and out of the hospital looking after my son, a psychiatric patient prior to the shutdown, I feel that it was a wrong decision to shut down the ward.
The people of Morobe should not take their mentally ill patients to the Laloki Psychiatric Hospital in Port Moresby when we have Angau, which has experienced medical specialist such as Dr Tienang in the province.
