The Constitutional and Law Reform Commission will be submitting to Cabinet soon a preliminary report on the review of the Organic Law and provincial and local level government elections, says secretary Dr Eric Kwa.
He said yesterday that the review team had already covered 14 provinces and it was time to submit a report to Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, the minister responsible for constitutional reforms.
He said many people had raised questions on the election laws after the 2017 general election.
“The people are thankful to the government for this review. They now know that the Government is taking on board their concerns,” he said.
The provinces yet to be covered in the review exercise are West Sepik, Gulf, Oro, Milne Bay, Western, Hela, Southern Highlands and Enga. A full report will be ready in December.
“According to our plan, we are expected to submit the final report with the recommendations in March. I’m happy that the report is almost done now,” Kwa said.
O’Neill will present to Cabinet and they will wait for the final report which the Commission will put together by December.
“In January the commission will discuss with the provinces the recommendations and they will finalise by February and complete the final report in March,” Kwa said.
“We are very confident that we can deliver. The data coming out is incredible. We want to thank National Research Institute which assisted us to complete the programme. University of Goroka and University of PNG will also be assisting us.”
