Reports of violence rise in Lae

THE Family and Sexual Violence Unit in Lae has seen an increase in reports of family and sexual violence, says Metropolitan Chief Supt Anthony Wagambie Jr.
He said the number of reported cases was increasing as more awareness were conducted.
“This shows that survivors of violence know where to report cases and get help from,” Wagambie said.
In 2016, there were 36 cases reported. In 2018, it increased to 220.
“As more people accessed the services, the challenges this unit faces every day is also increasing. Despite that, officers at the unit take on that challenge head-on for the sake of helping the survivors.”
He made the statement after the Lady Lionesses club chipped in to help the unit with cleaning items, toners, and office stationeries.
He thanked Lady Lionesses representative Karen Quinn when she presented two cheques for K7000 to support the unit.
“This will go towards creating files, printing interim protection orders for the courts and other requirements,” Wagambie said.
He said Sergeant Ruth Murup was managing the unit well with limited resources and had a lot of support from businesshouses.
