Residents catch Origin action live on big screens

RESIDENTS in National Capital District and the surrounding settlements will be gathering around various venues to watch the first State of Origin match on ‘big screens’ between the Queensland Maroons and New South Wales Blues in Sydney tonight.
Workmen from the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) have been busy putting the big screens in Kone Oval, Koki, Kilakila Secondary Oval, Jack Pidik Park, Erima, 9-Mile and Hohola Sports field.
The ‘big screens’ project is an initiative of the National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop, launched last year, to promote night life in Port Moresby city.
Parkop has been vocal about giving the city residents the freedom of participating in various activities during the night.
He said last year that city residents had been confined to homes which were behind closed doors and fences and having little freedom to enjoy themselves in the night.
He added that it was due to a number of criminals, who were instilling fear in the mindset of the people, and preventing them from coming out and enjoying night life.
State of Origin is among other activities, which include movies that Parkop had initiated to promote night life and encourage people to enjoy the evening with their families.
Some of the activities held last year saw the staging of the Governor’s Christmas Carol by Candlelight and Easter movies.
The big screen programme started last night with the showing of several movies.
Tonight’s programme will start at 6pm and will feature the first State of Origin clash between the Blues and the Maroons in Sydney.
All city residents are invited to bring their families along to watch match live on the big screen.
