POLICE in Port Moresby have warned the people about the increase in robbery and car theft cases during the recent rainy period.
NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’Dranou said opportunists usually took advantage of the rainy weather to commit crimes such as car thefts and robbery.
“Some of the factors contributing to the rise in those crimes are that most of the people are back in the city from holidays, and students are coming back for school,” he said.
“So the crowds and vehicles in the city provide an avenue for thieves and opportunists to take advantage.”
N’Dranou said the number of stolen vehicles had risen since last week.
“We had about 13 reported the previous week and 18 last week. That is the highest so far,” he said.
He said there was also more reports of break-ins and stealing, including one at a shop where more than K502,600 worth of items were stolen.
N’Dranou urged business houses to be more vigilant in terms of security.
“We should be cautious about little noises in the house and secure the premises with proper fences and strong doors,” he said.
N’Dranou said that in terms of sexual offence cases, the statistics remained the same every week.
