WITH the increase in creation and innovation, respecting intellectual property is very important, says an Investment Promotion Authority official.
“Intellectual property is the creation of the mind. Basically, people create things that solve problems. Intellectual property is about finding solutions to doing things better,” Amelia Na’aru, registrar for intellectual property office said.
Na’aru said during the World Intellectual Property Day celebrations in Port Moresby last Friday that PNG was a member of the World Intellectual Property Organisation.
It gives recognition to creators and innovators of intellectual property products and encourage respect for intellectual property rights. Na’aru said the intellectual property office was responsible for administering intellectual property rights laws and the granting of intellectual property rights.
“This year we talk about sports. Sports is a dynamic area – it unites people not only in Papua New Guinea but globally,” she said.
“We are looking at how intellectual property provides the platform for human advancement in sports and how technology is used to enhance sporting materials, sporting clothes and how broadcasting through wireless transmission is made all around the world.
“All of these things are about intellectual properties.
“They are creations of intellectual property rights.
“They are covered under different intellectual property laws and international conventions around the world.”
The celebration was attended by schools in the National Capital District including Kila Kila Secondary, St Joseph’s International, Carr Memorial Primary, Gordon International and Gerehu Primary.
