ROGUE police officers referred to as “double-timers” by a senior officer have been warned to “do the right thing”.
Acting Assistant Police Commissioner Anthony Wagambie Jnr, who is in charge of the National Capital District and Central command, told officers during a parade in Port Moresby on Saturday to carry out their duties faithfully.
He defined a “double-timer” as one wearing a police uniform but “on the other side”.
“Your time is running out. Don’t be a double-timer. If you are a policeman or woman, play your constitutional roles,” he said.
“If you are on the other side, we will catch up with you. It has been a long-time problem here. We have certain policemen working in collaboration with criminal elements in planning armed robberies and car thefts. We will soon get to them.”
He called on the officers to have pride in their work.
“Have pride in the uniform you wear. That uniform is the authority of the government. Do not get bribery from people. If you are in the profession for your own personal gain, you are in the wrong place,” he said.
“God will (only) be with you all the time if you do the right thing.”
He also warned them not to chew buai while in uniform. He said there were plans to begin sector patrols in Port Moresby to ensure more police visibility.
He also urged the public to stay out of trouble. “The public must change attitude,” he said.
“There is no respect for the law anymore. If you do things that you know is wrong and the police come and talk to you, you still talk back and do not listen. That is why we end up with problems. That is when police use force. Then we see allegations of police brutality.”
