Revenue commission boasts enforcement process that makes companies pay up

THE Internal Revenue Commission has an effective enforcement process that ensures companies or businesses are paying taxes as require by law, according to acting Commissioner-General Dr Alois Daton.
He said the commission was in the business of creating an environment which encourages compliance by businesses.
“We’ve got the normal enforcement type jobs when we do the door-knock exercise. We look at taxpayers and ask them if they are running a business, whether they are registered with IRC and have a Tax Identification Number (TIN) certificate. So if they show us the certificate, then we know they are registered with us,” Daton said.
“Once they are registered, the system tracks their compliance levels, if they lodge on time or if they have outstanding lodgments. The system will show it.
“When they have outstanding lodgements, the system will automatically advise and the debt and enforcement section will pick up the information and follow up. The same goes with payments, so our people will then follow up on payments.”
He said companies not registered were assisted to fill the necessary forms and issued TIN certificates.
