THE Internal Revenue Commission has joined police and the provincial government in a joint operation to review foreign-owned businesses in East New Britain province.
This followed the recent discovery of “illegal packaging”, when Health Environment Inspectors found imported rice and sugar, allegedly packed into PNG brand packages by an Asian-owned business.
The discovery led to the seizure of goods which were suspected to have been imported from China.
The PNG brand packing materials also appeared to have been imported.
Authorities are concerned that these goods may be sub-standard and could cause health problems to the consumers.
The company involved could also be evading tax and therefore undercutting legitimate businesses in PNG, a provincial government spokesman said.
