COMPANIES and government agencies in Bulolo are backing the revival of rugby league after a seven-year hiatus with the aim to develop youths and expose potential talents, says an official.
Bulolo Rugby League president Paul Tun told The National that the district administration was backing the initiative started by the National Forest Authority (NFA) with the support of Morobe Mining Joint Ventures and Papua New Guinea Forest Products.
He said the league started with a 13s tournament followed by a nines tourney involving 10 A-grade and 10 B-grade men’s teams, and eight women’s sides.
Tun said the season would start after next week’s nines. He said the fees for player and team registration were K50 and K100 respectively.
“We’ve affiliated with the Northern Confederate which has given us the green light to start the competition,” he said. “We’ve good crowds turning up every weekends.”
Zenag and Mumeng have two men’s sides and a women’s team respectively while Wau has assured that it will register when the season begins next month.
District chief executive Tae Guambelek said the league was gaining interest with many young talents showcasing their skills.
“Should any Digicel Cup teams need potential talents for their development programme, we are offering good players,” he said.
Guambelek said they were aiming to expand the competition.
“We are taking positive measures to develop our youths by giving them a new lease of life,” he said.
