RIGO MP Lekwa Gure’s stand on winning gold in soccer became a reality at the end of the inaugural Papua Youth Games in Alotau, Milne Bay, over the weekend.
Rigo defeated Kiriwina 4-3 in a penalty shootout in the playoff for gold.
In front of a packed crowd, Rigo took home the medal to Central and left soccer-mad Milne Bay stunned at Alice Wedega Park on Saturday.
At the start of the Games last week, Kiriwina-Goodenough MP Douglas Tomuriesa challenged teams that his football side were there to win gold.
But, Gure was confident that his side were capable of upsetting the hosts to claim gold.
As predicted, it was a valiant effort by both teams to reach the finals. In a tightly contest, it was 1-all in the 70-minute match with both sides forced into extra time.
But both sides remained scoreless at the end of extra time.
It came down to the wire in a penalty shootout where Rigo bagged four of their five attempts and Kiriwina slotted three.
The victory saw Rigo football reign supreme in the region.
Team Rigo also defeated Alotau Two 36-25 to claim gold in netball.
With a great week of action and entertainment, soccer attracted a good crowd to the Games.
