TEAM PNG’s taekwando pair Max and Samantha Kassman will become the first Papua New Guinea athletes to use the new scoring system at the Rio Olympics.
World Taekwando Federation president Chungwon Choue sanctioned the use of the new electronic scoring system to score points.
Taekwando coach Andrew Kassman welcomed the news, saying it would be good for sports in the country.
Speaking at a news conference on the eve of the Olympic taekwando meet, Choue said this would offer a chance for everyone to win medals.
In Rio, at Carioca Arena 3, the 128 athletes’ headgear is outfitted with electronic sensors, so the process will be automated.
Additionally, officials will use a dedicated radio frequency rather than wi-fi.
“There will be no malfunction, I’m 100 per cent (sure),” Choue said.
“This will be the most fair and transparent taekwondo competition in the Olympic Games.”
Athletes from 63 countries, including Papua New Guinea, will participate.
