Difficult access due to no roads into remote villages in Rigo district is likely to hamper the work of electoral officers to update the electoral roll.
According to the district’s returning officer Virgil Waisa, they have been tasked by the Electoral Commission to do enrolments in the district in the next four weeks but this could be delayed due to inaccessibility, especially into villages in Rigo inland.
Waisa said for them to reach those villages in Mt Obri and Mt Maria, it would take three days of walking.
“This could hamper our progress unless we are airlifted to those areas,” he said.
“It is good that we go to those areas because we need to enrol people.”
The enrolment exercise will start this weekend. Meanwhile, Central province administrator Gei Raga urged electoral officers in the district not to sit around and wait for transportation but move into those villages.
