A NOTORIOUS West New Britain criminal has died after being shot by police in Kimbe on Dec 18.
Provincial police commander Samson Siguyaru said Tango Waiyu, from Talasia, was shot on the right leg as he tried to escape from police.
He was taken to hospital but died shortly after.
Siguyaru said Waiyu and four accomplices held up a family at gun-point in their home and made off with computers and other valuables on Dec 15.
During the robbery, East Sepik man Willie John, a Liamu Reef Resort driver, was hit on his back with a machete.
Police caught the suspects on Saturday and then raided Waiyu’s home at Laleki settlement, where he was shot as he tried to flee.
Siguyaru said Waiyu was on the most wanted list, with outstanding cases of rape and armed robbery pending against him.
He warned all criminal elements and youths to refrain from causing problems during the festive season.
More than 100 police personnel, including members of the Tomaringa-based mobile squad, have been deployed in the province.
