ADDRESSING law and order is one side of the issue, and the other is implementing preventive measures in order to minimise crime, Lae MP John Rosso says.
Rosso said this meant identifying pro-active steps to minimise law and order issues by getting youths more involved in positive activities.
He said, while Buimo prison’s rehabilitation programme looked at supporting prisoners, little was being done in the settlements and suburbs to ensure fewer people were involved in crime.
“There has to be some measures to get these people to engage in situations where they are able to earn a positive living,” he said.
“Currently, low-risk prisoners are doing community service in Lae and the initiative has worked out well so far under the Buimo rehabilitation programme.
“We will try to help youths in settlements engage in small businesses by giving them a head start to get them into activities to generate income and support their families.”
Rosso, who is Lands and Physical Planning Minister, said the Lae City Authority (LCA) had made progress in trying to address law and order through a public-private partnership which had seen Lae police given 15 vehicles.
Three new police stations had been built while other assistance such as providing fuel for police operations, drones, global positioning systems (GPS) installation and the use of closed circuit television (CCTV).

  • Dear John Rosso, water supply have been the major problem here in Lae so kindly look into this issue and help assist us the tax payers. The ancient water pipes haven’t been extended to new areas. Kindly have your team move around and do assessment and create something as people are sick drinking water from rain water store in drums and old fridges.
