A UNITED Nations’ campaign against violence on women will be observed on Orange Day on Friday, and the public has been invited to join by wearing orange.

Resident coordinator Jeffrey Buchanan said in a statement yesterday: “Through the Orange Day the UNiTE campaign seeks to raise public awareness and increase political will and resources for preventing and ending all forms of violence against women and girls throughout the world,” he said.

The UN Women in PNG will use the occasion to drive the efforts of its safe cities programme.

The safe cities programme has developed measures like a mobile banking system and vendors’ association plus specialised police units in market places for vendors.

Buchanan said: “The Port Moresby programme takes a holistic approach to increase safety at the markets through the support of the community, the government and the police and other partners.

“Suitable measures have been designed to address identified security risks in the markets.  The improvements made at Gerehu and Gordon markets have increased safety for vendors, customers and the community.”
