Safety at sea still a concern

The shipping industry is a vital link in the development of the country. Yet, the very people who are the backbone of this industry are forgotten in terms of welfare issues. While the PNG Maritime College and the NMSA are emphasising safety on board, some shipping companies are ignorant about it and forcing masters and chief engineers to sail ships that are un-sea worthy. The consequence of not sailing the ship is termination. Can the Government make laws to protect our seafarers, their employment and welfare?
