PAPUA New Guinea men’s rugby league nines team captain and silver medallist Gahuna Silas says everything about Samoa is “fantastic”.
Silas, pictured, led his team to the final in a tough match against Fiji, who claimed gold in week one of the 16th Pacific Games in the Samoan capital of Apia.
After PNG got the rugby league nines contest out of the way, Silas and his team were seen out and about in Apia over the weekend.
“In the tournament, we did well by winning all our pool games and we went to the finals,” Silas said.
“We played against Tonga and we beat them 14-nil. We went into the gold grand final but unfortunately it was not our day. Fiji beat us and we took out silver.”
In their pool games, PNG beat Tonga 10-0 and against Samoa, PNG won 10-4.
PNG were able to beat Fiji 10-4 in the pool rounds. But Fiji came back to win the gold in the final. They completed their games by July 9.
“We are just enjoying the city, going around looking at the places, the markets,” Silas said at the Food Court in Fugalei.
“We are enjoying the environment and the hospitality. Everybody has been good wherever we go people see us and they respect us.
“There is always a smiling face from the Samoans. It is a good experience for us and it’s our first time here. We’re enjoying the environment, hospitality and everyone who lives here.”
More than 350 Team PNG athletes travelled to Samoa for the Games.
Silas and his teammates departed Samoa on Sunday.
“I am going to remember everything about Samoa, the place, the people, the environment, everything was really fantastic,” he said.
