PAPUA New Guinea Orchids fullback Gemma Schnaubelt says representing the country in front of her family and home supporters is something she will cherish for the rest of her life.
She said this after the Orchids’ 20-16 win over England in the second of a two-test series at the Oil Search National Football Stadium in Port Moresby on Saturday.
The 22-year-old, from Hula, Central, thanked coach Bagelo Solien for entrusting her with the position.
“When I was told to play the position, I was also tasked to complete my sets on the field,” Schnaubelt said.
“I knew that I had the obligation attached with the number and that was to execute according to the coach.
“Even though we led at halftime, I thought England would come back better prepared to attack us and claim the win.
“But a try from Roswita Kapo kept us ahead. We knew we had to establish a good lead to make it hard for England to fight back.”
She said win would leave a legacy for women in the country.
Schnaubelt resides in Australia and has been playing for the West Brisbane Panthers in Queensland for the past four years. She was scouted by the Orchids after her impressive performances at the Kokomos Nines.
Before joining Orchids, Schnaubelt represented PNG in rugby union and touch.
‘’It’s amazing to represent Papua New Guinea.
“It’s an honour to play for my country and to win the test for my country,” he said.
